• We can use a blood test to find out what you are allergic to.
• Determining what you are allergic to will help us in prescribing the right medications and will also help us guide you on different environmental measures you can use to help lessen your symptoms.

Allergy blood tests are used to find out if you have an allergy. Your body produces something called an IgE antibody to specific allergens if you are allergic and the blood test can determine if you have any of these IgE antibodies in your blood. We will check for the most common types of allergens: tree pollen, weed pollen, grass pollen, cat dander, dog dander, dust mites and cockroach.

• A blood test involves taking blood from a vein in your arm. Staff working at the lab will be highly trained in this, using sterile equipment and measures to ensure your safety.
• The test should not require more than one tube of blood.
• After the needle has been removed, pressure will be applied in order to minimise bleeding. It is important to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise 24 hours after the blood test in order to avoid bruising or bleeding. If you have any concerns, please contact the lab before your test.

Make sure you drink plenty of water. This will make it easier for the team to conduct your blood test.

One of the advantages to serum IgE testing as opposed to skin testing is that you can continue to take all of your medications prior to your lab appointment.

• If you are concerned about the necessity of these tests and do not want to proceed, that’s ok! We can still prescribe medications that will help you however, you will not be eligible for immunotherapy.
• If you would like to proceed with the blood test but are feeling nervous, things that are helpful include: lying down during the blood test or relaxation techniques such as deep breathing.

It should take about 7-10 days to get your results.

In rare instances, it is difficult to collect enough blood to analyse. This can happen for example if a needle phobic patient is unable to hold still, or more rarely due to veins being too small to collect enough blood. If this is the case, the phlebotomist will let you know what your options are.

Your appointment should take around 15 minutes - 20 minutes if you make an appointment ahead of time.

No, you do not always need an appointment. Most lab facilities have walk-in options available; however, to make things easier we suggest that you book your appointment online.

Yes you can cancel the blood test at any time. If you do not want to proceed, you will not be charged for the blood test.
