This reaction occurs when the eyes are exposed to allergens – such as pollen or pet dander – causing the mast cells in the eyes to release histamine. This chemical reaction manifests as inflammation of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva, leading to itchy, red, watery eyes.

Cucumber Slices

You may think cucumbers are just a healthy salad ingredient, but they are much more than that! Cucumbers are actually extremely helpful in alleviating puffiness or redness of the eyes.

These vegetables have an exceptionally high water content, allowing them to cool the eyes, hydrate them, and reduce swelling.

In order to reap their benefits, cut up a refrigerated cucumber and gently place one slice over each closed eye. Sit with these on the eyes for about 15 minutes, or until the cucumber is no longer cold.

Aloe Vera Gel

Another anti-inflammatory tool for relieving eye allergy symptoms is aloe vera. Known for easing redness and pain related to sunburns, this succulent plant’s gel contains compounds that are useful in soothing inflammation and itchiness of the eyes as well.

Soak cotton balls in pure aloe vera juice, and place them over the eyes for approximately 30 minutes for effective symptom relief.

Raw Honey

You might be thinking, “What? Honey in my eyes?”

Well, while you shouldn’t be applying honey directly to your eyes, consuming raw local honey may be just what you need to ease your eye allergy woes.

Incorporating local raw honey (essentially, honey produced by bees in your local geographical area) into your diet may reduce symptoms of seasonal allergies. Because eye allergies are typically the result of seasonal allergens entering the eyes, the consumption of honey is useful in limiting reactions.

Lifestyle Tips for Managing Eye Allergies

In addition to the various home remedies shown to help relieve eye allergy symptoms, certain several lifestyle changes can limit your exposure to allergens. These include:

  • Cleaning your home regularly to reduce inhalant allergens, such as dust and pet dander
  • Using air filters and purifiers to improve indoor air quality
  • Keeping your windows closed during periods of peak pollen
  • Wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear when outdoors to shield your eyes from allergens
  • Refraining from touching or rubbing your eyes
